Parents Support One Another @ MyOutOfControlTeen.com/support = I need help with the following issue:
Our son, D., is completely ODD. He is smoking, and refuses to quit. HE is 15. He goes ballistic when we take away his stuff. The Dr. says he should go into residential and we are looking into that. He is coming home right now from in-patient and I dread the moment he steps foot over the threshold.

I would ask your doctor first if your child has O.D.D. and have them tested for it. Never self-diagnose your child, because some symptoms for certain disorders are the same as others. There are a lot of symptoms that ADHD and ODD have in common.
My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD when she was 6. I just keep trying to encourage good behavior with and ignore the bad. Yelling, punishment, etc...hasn't helped. I find that if I ignore her when she's having an outburst, things settle down quicker and then we can talk about it. She has gotten better but it's a constant struggle. Unfortunately the doctor's only advice (and we've seen several doctors) is medication, which I refuse to do. Good luck and try to be patient.
Suggestions-
Have consistent positive reinforcement for good behavior. This will hopefully increase good behavior.
Punishment (such as yelling) does not increase good behavior.
